HPD Officer S. Durfee, who discharged his duty weapon, was transported to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Officer Durfee is assigned to the Northwest Patrol Division and was sworn in as an officer in January 2016.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Detectives D. Hammons and M. Childs reported:
HPD patrol officers responded to a home invasion in-progress call at a residence near the above address. Upon arrival, officers confronted two suspects inside the home. As one of the suspects, later identified as Michael Perez, was being taken into custody, the second suspect appeared from a back room and began shooting at officers. Officer Durfee was shot in the leg, but managed to return fire. The suspect was not struck. The suspect then fled the scene on foot out the back door of the residence. A third suspect, in a waiting vehicle, fled the scene in an unknown direction. Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and transported Officer Durfee to the hospital where he was treated and released.
The second suspect, later identified as Raymond Perez, was located about a block from the residence and was taken into custody without incident. The third suspect. later identified as Garcia Chavez, was located several hours later in the 5800 block of Hollister Road and was taken into custody by HPD SWAT team officers without incident.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shooting incidents in the Houston city limits, this case is being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
