A suspect wanted and charged in the fatal shooting of a man at 6420 Gulf Freeway (South Interstate Highway 45) service road about 12:40 p.m. on June 7 is in custody.
The suspect, Carlos Ray Paez, 20, is charged with manslaughter in the 179th State District Court. A booking photo of Paez is attached to this news release.
The victim is identified as Fernando Villarreal, 41.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeants M. Brady and M. Casso reported:
Mr. Villarreal was fatally shot outside a gas station at the above address. The suspect, described only as a Hispanic male wearing a dark-colored hoodie and dark shorts, fled the scene in an unknown direction.
A preliminary investigation determined Villarreal and the suspect knew each other and were together at the gas station for more than three hours before the suspect shot Villarreal. The suspect was believed to live in the area of Telephone Road and the Gulf Freeway. Surveillance photos of the suspect were released to the public on June 12.
On August 15, homicide detectives identified Paez as the suspect in the surveillance photos. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was contacted and a warrant was issued for Paez’s arrest.
On Thursday (October 3), Paez turned himself in to authorities at the Harris County Jail and he was taken into custody without incident.
