Houston police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred at 7500 Bellfort Street about 8 a.m. last Friday (Jan. 10).
The identity of the deceased male, 69, is pending verification by the Harris County institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant E. Alejandro and Officer Z. Alikhan reported:
The male, a passenger in a vehicle involved in a prior crash, was standing on the sidewalk near a guardrail at the above address. The female driver of a black Chevrolet Impala was traveling eastbound on Bellfort Street and, in an attempt to avoid hitting the vehicles in front of her involved in the prior crash, swerved to the right and struck the guardrail. The male pedestrian observed the Impala driving in his direction and jumped the guardrail, landing on the grassy area under the bridge.
Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and transported the male to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The female driver, 39, who remained at the scene, was determined not to be impaired and was questioned and released.
The investigation is continuing.
