Charges have been filed against an armed suspect shot by Houston police officers at 7500 Richmond Avenue about 3 a.m. on Sunday (Jan. 12).
The male suspect, Savion Cartrell Brinson, 30, is charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon in Harris County Criminal Court #11. A booking photo of Brinson, who remains hospitalized in stable condition with gunshot wounds, is not available at this time.
HPD Senior Police Officer E. Bettinger and Officer C. Santana, who discharged their duty weapons, are assigned to the Midwest Patrol Division. Senior Officer Bettinger was sworn in as an officer in September 2011 and Officer Santana in May 2017. Neither officer was injured in this incident.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Detectives C. Walker and H. Le reported:
Officers were dispatched to a crash with a disturbance at the intersection of Richmond Avenue at Hillcroft Avenue. While en route to the call for service, the officers received notification one of the individuals involved was armed with a handgun.
The officers arrived and observed a group of people congregated in the parking lot of a gas station and in the roadway of 7500 Richmond Avenue. The two responding uniformed officers exited their marked patrol vehicle and observed a male with a gun in his hand, walking from the crashed vehicle in the roadway. The officers gave several verbal commands for the male to drop the gun, and when he refused, fearing for the safety of themselves and the lives of the group nearby, the officers discharged their weapons and struck the male more than one time. Officers began life-saving measures on the male, who was then transported by paramedics to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
After consulting with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, the male, later identified as Savion Brinson, was charged for his role in the incident.
As is customary in HPD officer-involved shootings in the city limits, the incident is being investigated by the Special Investigations Unit, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
Anyone with additional information in the initial crash or in this case is urged to contact the HPD Special Investigations Unit at 713-308-3600.
