Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of a suspect wanted in the murder of a Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office deputy at 9333 Stella Link Road about 11:35 a.m. on Wednesday (Jan. 15).
The suspect, Robert Lee Davis III, 56, was wanted in the killing of Deputy Jesus Vargas.
Davis was located and shot by members of the U.S. Marshals Service about 4:50 p.m. behind the businesses at 9127 Stella Link Road. Davis initiated the gunfire after he shot a Marshals Service K-9, “Rocky,” at least twice. “Rocky” was transported to Westbury Animal Hospital in stable condition. Davis was pronounced deceased at the scene. A deputy with the Marshals Service was struck by a bullet projectile in his arm and was transported to an area hospital for the non-life-threatening injury.
HPD Special Investigations Unit Detectives H. Le, C. Walker, K. Vu and J. Windham reported:
Multiple law enforcement agencies were actively searching for Davis in the area of 9400 Stella Link Road when K-9 “Rocky” alerted on a large dumpster behind a business at 9127 Stella Link Road. When a deputy with U.S. Marshals Service dispatched K-9 “Rocky” into the dumpster in an attempt to apprehend the suspect, the suspect shot “Rocky” more than once. Four deputies with the U.S. Marshals Service then discharged their weapons at the suspect, striking him multiple times.
As is customary in officer-involved shooting incidents in the city limits, the incidents are being investigated by the HPD Special Investigations Unit and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
