Suspect Arrested, Charged in Fatal Crash at 600 East Loop South

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal crash at 600 East Loop South (East Interstate Highway 610 South) about 6:20 p.m. on Wednesday (May 1).
The suspect, Alma Alicia Zavala, 32, is charged with failure to stop and render aid in the 209th State District Court.
The identity of the deceased male, 35, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant P. Lee and Officer N. Luu reported:
An adult male and female were walking on the shoulder of the freeway at the above address when a silver Mazda CX5 veered into the shoulder and struck the male pedestrian.  The female was not injured. The driver fled the scene and was stopped by several witnesses, not far from the crash site.
HPD patrol officers responded to the scene and detained the female driver, later identified as Zavala.  She did not show signs of intoxication.
Houston Fire Department paramedics transported the male to Ben Taub General Hospital where doctors later pronounced him deceased.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was contacted and Zavala was subsequently charged in this crash.
